An illustrated history of the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway locomotive works at Horwich in Lancashire. In the 1870s, the L&YR found itself in urgent need of a new works as its existing facility at Miles Platting was situated in a constricted site and unable to expand. Land was acquired in Horwich and the new works opened in 1887.

Over the years Horwich Works developed an impressive reputation for locomotive building, including many different types of loco for the L&YR
