632Mitre Bridge Junction Signal Box in 1985-6”. Allan Patterson recalls working at a West London line box. Four pages and 7 colour photographs from the BR blue diesel period, including one of the track diagram of the box. Mitre Bridge Junction is where the loop from Willesden High Level Junction on the North London line meets the West London line. There is good detail of working the box, including the difficulties caused by the unsuitability of the signalling layout for the movements required.

634100 Years Ago”. The regular Railway Magazine feature looks back to the June 1908 issue and Lieut.-Col. Yorke’s conclusion, from his investigation of the Shrewsbury accident, that the driver was asleep. The railway unions felt that this reflected on enginemen generally and was contrary to the view held by some drivers that some brake pipe connections were not properly made. This did not, however, explain why the driver did not whistle for the guard to apply his brake.

635The Wantage Tramway – and the facts in the case of 'Jane Shannon'”. Article by L A Summers. This seven-page article with photographs, maps and references contains a history of the tramway, its passenger and freight services and its motive power. Our interest is the locomotive Shannon which the author had discovered preserved on Wantage Road station in his youth. The Wantage Tramway purchased the George England 0-4-0WT from the LNWR for £350 in 1878. The LNWR had inherited it from the Sandy & Potton Railway in 1862 and used it on the Cromford & High Peak line and for shunting at Crewe. The locomotive was named Jane by the Wantage Tramway.

636Britain’s Railways in North America; Part One – The London & North Western Railway”. Article by Michael Brooks. Three pages, illustrated with 6 colour reproductions of covers of LNWR publications. The article describes the LNWR presence in North America and the services offered, particularly the special trains from Liverpool to Euston. The transfer of services from Liverpool to Southampton in the Edwardian period was a big blow to the company.

637Some Notes on the Monmouthshire Railway & Canal Company” (Part 2) . Article by Michael Rutherford. This article is primarily about the lines which were operated by the GWR from 1875. However the development of railways in this area was affected by competition between the GWR and LNWR and the author provides a holistic account, with links to the latter via the Sirhowy Railway at Nine Mile Point, various junctions with the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway and joint lines northwards.

640A Midland Electric Centenary”. Sacrilege you say, but read on. This is a one page feature of three colour photographs, taken by Gavin Morrison on October 9th 1965. 2008 marks the centenary of the Midland Railway's Lancaster – Morecambe – Heysham electrification. When the equipment became life expired in 1951, BR replaced the rolling stock with converted ex-LNWR trains from the Willesden Junction – Earls Court service which had been in store since 1940.
