|London Midland & Scottish (LMS)||Formed in January 1923 as a result of the 1921 Railways Act. It consisted of eight constituent companies (including the LNWR) and twenty-seven less-important subsidiary companies. The LMS was also a substantial shareholder in a number of important joint lines, and also lines in Northern Ireland and Eire. At the time the LMS was the largest joint stock corporation in the world.|
