Press Digest No 38
Item Reference
616Memorandum to S. J. Symes from E. S. Cox”. Four pages, 3 photographs and a copy of the memorandum. This one is a comparison of the Fowler Class 4P 2-6-4Ts and the Precursor tanks, covering coal consumption, common shed repairs, timekeeping and comments from the footplate. There are two fine photographs of Precursor tanks from the LMS period.
LMS Journal. No 20
617LMS Non-Passenger Coaching Stock”. Article by Peter Tatlow. Eleven pages, 16 photographs, 3 references and a table of the totals of NPC stock taken over from constituent companies. This is a general review by vehicle type, based on previous articles by T W (Smokey) Bourne. It is illustrated with some interesting photographs which include ex LNWR locomotives and stock.
LMS Journal. No 20
618The Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Line”. Article by Stanley C. Jenkins MA. Fourteen pages, 16 photographs, a map and 5 station layouts taken from OS maps. This second instalment is a station by station survey, from Castle Douglas to Portpatrick. (Previous Press Digest reference 613).
LMS Journal. No 20
619Two letters”. The February 2008 issue of The Railway Magazine prints two letters referring to the Shrewsbury rail crash of 1907. One contains anecdotal information that the fireman swapped duties on the night of the accident. The second includes a poem, possibly incomplete, recounting the events of the night.
The Railway Magazine. Vol 154 no. 1282 – February 2008
620High Born Ladies”. Six-page photo feature about Coronation Pacifics in BR days; some of the photographs show the locos working on the ex-LNWR main line.
British Railways Illustrated. Vol 17 No 5 – February 2008
621A Fancy of Fowlers”. Eight-page article about the LMS's Fowler 2-6-2Ts; includes references to and photographs of the locos on ex-LNWR lines.
British Railways Illustrated. Vol 17 No 5 – February 2008
622Bridge That Gap: 1”. Five detailed photographs of Bridges 81 and 83 near Allerton.
British Railways Illustrated. Vol 17 No 5 – February 2008
623Not exactly LNWR, but Following on from the December and January issues of Bylines there is a 6-page article about a visit in 1964 to the then-closed Stratford-upon-Avon & Midland Junction Railway. (The tenuous LNWR connection is, of course, that the SMJ connected with the LNWR at Blisworth and Cockley Brake Junction.)
Railway Bylines. Vol 13 No 4 – March 2008
624Patriots.”. Ten-page article about the Patriot 4-6-0s in BR days; includes references to and photographs of the locos on ex-LNWR lines.
British Railways Illustrated. Vol 17 No 6 – March 2008
625Bridge That Gap: 2”. Five detailed photographs of Bridges 83 and 84 near Allerton.
British Railways Illustrated. Vol 17 No 6 – March 2008
626Wolverhampton High Level”. Primarily an introduction to the photographic work of the late D.J. Norton, with notes by Bob Essery. Fourteen pages, 14 photographs of which 8 are full page and 2 maps. One map is a reproduction of the OS map of the station area from pre 1923 and the other an extract from the 1920 MR Distance Diagram. The photographs are from the 1952 to 1964 period with the usual excellent Wild Swan reproduction. It is surprising how much of the ex-LNWR infrastructure remains.
LMS Journal. LMS 85th Anniversary Issue
627On the North Wales Coast”. A 4 page photo feature, with 10 colour photographs of steam powered services from the period 1958 to 1964. Again there is much ex LNWR infrastructure in evidence, also Super D 49314 on a long freight at Rhosneigr in July 1960.
Backtrack. Vol 22 No 3 – March 2008
